As one of Brotherton’s founders, Richard’s role involves running the business day-to-day and building client and lender relationships. A finance lawyer by trade, qualifying at Hogan Lovells in London, Richard soon found his vocation as an investment banker specialising in real estate. That journey began at Barclays Capital, where he was responsible for originating, structuring and securitising large loans secured on real estate assets. On joining Europa Capital, his capabilities increased twofold. Firstly, obtaining, structuring and negotiating finance for the fund’s acquisition of assets across Europe. Secondly, providing mezzanine finance to third-party clients.
Next came a major move to CR Investment Management, where Richard took a Managing Director position and was a key player in helping to grow the business. While there, he set up and ran several international offices. He also worked with hedge funds and private equity capital to acquire non-performing loan portfolios on European assets.
Phil is a Chartered Surveyor with over 25 years’ experience in the real estate industry. He liaises closely with our clients on all aspects of property DD and modelling prior to creating IMs and originating loans. His valuation experience, gained while at property advisory firm DTZ (now part of Cushman & Wakefield), enables him to swiftly appraise client’s business plans and explain them to prospective lenders.
In addition, the asset management skills he honed while at private wealth management company, London & Capital, are invaluable in his current role. He works closely with lenders, critically reviewing and negotiating term sheets, understanding the impact of the financial covenants on day-to-day management and loan execution.
Robert takes the lead on most of our residential-led investment and development deals. On a day-to-day basis, his role varies from assisting our clients to help build cash flows, appraisals and financial models, through to advising on acquisitions and disposals. At times, he acts as an in-house finance function for some of our more entrepreneurial private clients. He also works closely with our legal execution team, and in turn, the appointed lawyers and valuers, ensuring that the loan documents reflect a realistic business plan.
Robert is a qualified Chartered Accountant and former principal property developer. Having been a Finance Director in his previous role, he brings a wealth of experience in the construction industry, raising debt and equity, structuring property transactions, negotiating joint venture agreements and managing all aspects of financial modelling. Robert has a passion for the residential and development sector but also has a keen interest in the commercial market.
Jamie came to us through The Langdon Foundation, a sterling organisation that helps young people with learning disabilities and autism secure employment to live the life they choose. He is a valued member of the Brotherton family, assisting with office administration and supporting the wider team.
Alex joined Brotherton as an analyst. Having interned with us during the two summers prior to his graduation, joining the team full-time was a natural progression.
Alex gained a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His education, coupled with the experience he gained during his previous internships, has provided him with the tools to manage a range of responsibilities from producing investment memos to managing the Brotherton database and assisting the team with the production of financial models.
Rob is one of our three non-executive advisers, bringing invaluable knowledge to the team. He qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters, where he specialised in commercial real estate. He spent the following 19 years as a partner and director at Spink Property, a multi-disciplinary high-end residential development company. Since then, Rob has been active in both the short-term lending market and the world of commercial property development and investment.
Ben came to us from Forsters LLP, where he was a senior associate in the banking group. He brings valuable structuring and legal experience to the Brotherton team. He has over six years’ experience acting as a real estate finance lawyer for a variety of borrowers (companies, funds, partnerships and individuals) and lenders (private and retail banks, financial institutions and mezzanine finance houses) in relation to financing the development and acquisition of commercial and residential property.
Ben sources and analyses financing offers and, having acted for both borrowers and lenders, is uniquely placed to anticipate and address issues that commonly arise during the execution process. He is also actively involved in negotiating term sheets and finance documents, managing the CP process and supporting the client and their advisory team throughout the lifecycle of a transaction.
Having joined Brotherton as an analyst, Banner uses his development appraisal skills to help produce financial models for clients. His additional responsibilities include helping to produce investment memos and managing the deal and lender database. After gaining a first-class honours degree in Economics and Business Management from Newcastle University, he started an MSc in Real Estate at the University of Reading. At the same time, he worked for private equity firm LSL Partners, helping to identify potential sites for acquisition and producing development appraisals.
Marcus is one of our three non-executive advisors, providing strategic advice to the team, with more than 30 years of experience in the real estate industry. Following a 17-year career leading the Real Estate business at Blackrock, he most recently founded NorthCroft Capital, a real estate investment and advisory business. His other non-executive roles include Cadillac Fairview and CBRE.
Daniel formed Brotherton in 2014, building on 20 years’ experience across banking and real estate finance. His ambition was to create a business and team that would offer clients institutional-level service while upholding an entrepreneurial spirit. Daniel and Richard have shaken up the tired traditions of the capital advisory industry and have visions of expanding and pioneering into new sectors and geographies.
Before Brotherton, Daniel was head of real estate finance at independent wealth manager London & Capital, having started his career at ING Bank in the Loan Syndications team. He graduated from the University of Leeds with a First Class Honours degree in French and Business.
Tim works closely with sponsors, structuring their loans and advising on the most appropriate lenders in the market. He has successfully syndicated several senior tranches on behalf of debt funds that have written whole loans, allowing the funds to hold the higher-yielding junior portions. He has strong relationships right across the European lending market, both with traditional and alternative lenders.
Tim joined Brotherton from Pbb, where he was the Head of UK Syndications. Previously, he’d started his career at Barclays on the graduate scheme and worked in real estate finance at RBS and Deutsche Postbank. Tim is a graduate of Nottingham University and completed the Real Estate Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Max joined us as an analyst. His experience of maintaining the deal and lender database gave him a strong understanding of where a lenders appetite is at any one time. He’s now involved in the full range of Brotherton’s deals, covering all asset classes and transaction sizes. He has often been heavily involved in pulling together information for the investment memos for lenders and managing their feedback.
Having graduated with a Civil engineering degree from Durham University, Max has always enjoyed the analytical side of real estate, and he is often tasked with analysing and building financial models for clients. Since being promoted to Associate, he has started to lead more of the smaller transaction processes and take on more responsibility in our larger deals.
Tanya joined us to help grow our transactional execution offering. She works alongside the origination and structuring teams to negotiate term sheets, ensuring they align with the client’s business plan and deliver a commercially competitive loan package. She then assists with progressing the transaction through the lender’s credit/approvals process and oversees the full execution piece. This work involves liaising with the appointed lawyers and valuer, assisting with negotiating the loan documents and commercial issues, ensuring CPs are satisfied and finding practical solutions to any challenges that arise.
Tanya is a qualified real estate lawyer who worked in practice for five years, advising clients on mixed-use development, regeneration and procurement projects. She then joined a residential developer as General Counsel, where her role included advising on acquisitions, disposals, planning law/process, construction and property finance. She also advised the board on all corporate governance matters.
